Another beautiful day full of delicious food at the 4th annual San Francisco Street Food Festival, my favorite food festival. I went prepared with a list of vendors I wanted to check out, a water bottle, my camera, and some tupperware. Now in its fourth year, the festival includes dozens of local vendors stretching along six blocks of Folsom Street. The proceeds benefit La Cocina, a San Francisco incubator kitchen that helps local chefs start their own food business. Many of them were represented here, family-run small businesses, catering companies, and specialty food purveyors, along with food trucks and more established restaurants. One such restaurant was State Bird Provisions (reviewed previously here), which was just named one of Bon Appetit’s best new restaurants in America for 2012. They served a hand-pulled garlic bread that was deep-fried at their booth and topped with burrata, an Italian cheese made with mozarella and cheese. North Beach’s 15 Romolo served a delicious pulled pork hash with crunchy cole slaw and a fried egg, as well as fried chicken wings with a coconut sauce. Pinx is a local catering company hoping to open their own Southern breakfast restaurant. They served sweet potato pie waffles with bourbon caramel sauce, and maple glazed bacon. Another great bite was Chiefo’s Kitchen West African Moi Moi, a steamed black-eyed pea pudding that was crisped on the grill and topped with a Nigerian tomato stew and corned beef. Food trucks were well represented, including The Peached Tortilla from Austin, TX that served a Japanese “falafel” dog, falafel with cole slaw and some type of sauce (sorry, can’t remember all the details!). Claire’s Squares served deep-fried caramel, a decadent and sweet bite of gooey caramel in a crunchy shortbread, topped with raspberry sauce. Sweets Collection made edible flowers in different flavors of gelatin, a unique and beautiful dessert. Can’t wait until next year!
